Birds Extinct in the Wild.

The Alagoas Curassow - Mitu mitu - is a large, mainly glossy black pheasant-like bird. It was formerly found in forests in north-eastern Brazil, but it is now extinct in the wild. A captive population exists.

The Guam Rail - Gallirallus owstoni - is a flightless bird, which is extinct in the wild and endemic to Guam. The efforts by Beck, and others, to save the Guam rail have been promising. There are now approximately 120 Guam rails in captivity in Guam and approximately 35 birds in captive breeding programs throughout the United States.

The Hawaiian Crow - Corvus hawaiiensis is extinct in the wild. Before this, the species was found only in the western and southeastern parts of the Island of Hawaii. About 78 birds remain in two captive breeding facilities operated by the San Diego Zoo. Attempts to reintroduce captive-bred birds into the wild have been hampered by predation by the Hawaiian Hawk - Buteo solitarius - which is listed as Near Threatened. On April 16, 2009, the US Fish and Wildlife Service announced a five year plan to spend more than $14 million to prevent the extinction of the Hawaiian Crow.

The Socorro Dove -Zenaida graysoni - is extinct in the wild. It was endemic to Socorro Island off the west coast of Mexico. The last sighting in its natural habitat was in 1972. There are not more than 200 and probably fewer than 100 purebred birds in captivity. A reintroduction programme is in the early stages of preparation.
